By 26, Japhy had spent the family fortune and taken up being a switchman for the B&0 Railroad. It was while sending Baltimore to Toledo that he came upon the novel idea of photographing static objects while traveling at high speeds. The above is one such work.

This epigraph proceeded Japhy Grant's 1899 manifesto If You Bitches Won't Love Me Then I Won't Love Me!: "All self-portraits are wish fufillments." This one appears to be no exception.
